Types and Preparation Technology of Soda Ash

1.Types of Soda Ash:

(1)According to the different density: soda ash is mainly divided into light soda ash (referred to as light alkali) and heavy soda ash (referred to as heavy alkali), its chemical composition is sodium carbonate, but the physical form is different: the density of light alkali is 500-600kg/m3, which is white crystalline powder.

(2)According to the different uses, soda ash is mainly divided into industrial grade soda ash and food grade soda ash.

①Industrial grade soda ash is one of the main raw materials of flat glass, can also be used as a co-solvent for smelting, flotation agent for beneficiation and desulfurization agent for steelmaking, in the field of textile, soda ash can be used as a soft water agent in the production process of textile products.

②Food-grade soda ash can be used as a pasta additive to play a neutralizing agent, leavening agent, buffer, dough improver, increase the taste and flexibility of pasta, and can also be used as an auxiliary additive in the production of MSG and soy sauce.

2.Preparation Technology of Soda Ash

Soda ash manufacturing process can be divided into natural alkali method and synthetic alkali method. Synthetic alkali method is divided into ammonia alkali method and combined alkali method.

(1) Natural alkali method: The production raw materials are mainly natural alkali ore, the production process is simple and the cost is low.

(2) Ammonia alkali method: also known as the Solvay method, the upstream is mainly raw salt and limestone, the method through ammonia brine to absorb carbon dioxide to get sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), and then calcined sodium bicarbonate to get light alkali, after conversion to get heavy alkali.

(3) Joint alkali method: also known as Hou Debang method, it is improved and developed on the basis of ammonia alkali process, and its upstream is mainly raw salt and synthetic ammonia.
